Enjoy Llangollen
Llangollen there are many places of interest and beautiful
scenery to enjoy in this area. It is more enjoyable to park
your car for awhile and take off on foot to explore to get the
best out of your visit here.
There is the famous thirteenth century bridge over the Dee,
not far from the bridge is the cone shaped hill called Dinas
Bran the views as well as the walk are well worth it.
To the west is the Horseshoe Pass, the views from the top
especially of the Eglwyseg Rocks are really splendid.
Nearby are the Horseshoe Falls which are not natural falls,
Thomas Telford built them in 1830 to provide water for his canal?
You may want to visit the ruins of Valle Crucis Abbey the Abbey
dates from the end of the twelfth century and was a Cistercian
foundation.
You
can take a boat trip along the Llangollen Canal it crosses
the Dee Valley by Telford’s
120ft. high Pontcysyllte Aqueduct which is the longest
in Britain.
Llangollen
is famous as the home of the International Eisteddfod the
eisteddfod is held
in July it was started in 1947 and has
become one of Wales’s largest festivals.
You
can visit the black and white mansion house which was the
home of the ‘Ladies of Llangollen’ from
1780 there were two aristocratic ladies and their maid.
The Lady Eleanor
Butler and her friend the Honorable Sarah Ponsonby, these
eccentric ladies were visited by many famous people such
as Byron, Wordsworth
and the Duke of Wellington.
In
1809 the house was purchased by their maid Mary Caryll
who left it to her mistresses when she died. All three are
buried in St. Colleen’s churchyard. There are many attractions
in this area it is well worth visiting.
